Kazamba

Textile Sculpture

weaving by Orbert Kooma of Lizaze Village

MATERIALS: Mututu Fibre

The sculptural element of the piece is an abstract representation of the Mututu (cordia pilossisima) tree from which the Tokaleya community alchemise or derive botanical products. Materials like rope or thread are extracted from the inner bark of the young branches of the Mututu and are used to weave fishing nets (kazamba)or the branches of the trees which are used to make spear handles. This piece speaks to the ways in which the indigenous people still express a resilience to imposition and disruption through the expression of long-standing symbiosis with nature and botanical material within the present.
